Yiddish in American Cinema and Television
Language: English

Session: The lecture will trace the use of Yiddish words and phrases in American cinema and television. We will try to map which words are chosen, and whether their meaning in the English context is the same as the meaning that they usually have in Yiddish? Do you have to be Jewish to understand these words? And how does Yiddish function on the American screen – does it add humor, Jewishness, or other elements to the scene?

Bio: Oren Cohen Roman is a researcher of Jewish Ashkenazic culture and Yiddish literature. He teaches Yiddish at Lund University.
